Year After The Death Of Christian Atsu, See Shocking Details Of How His Twin Sister, Agent, Found His Body In Turkey
The family members of the late Ghanaian player Christian Atsu—his wife, sister, and agent—have spoken out about their grief one year after the tragic events in Turkey that took their lives. The surviving spouses of Christian Atsu—Christiana Twasam, Nana Sechere, and Marie Claire-Rupio—spoke to the UK-based The Athletic about their struggles to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. Christiana Twasam described his family’s valiant efforts to find him and the impact of the mystery surrounding his death and disappearance.
“I was devastated when I got there because I thought no one was going to survive in that building,” Christiana recalls, recalling the sight of the collapsed Renaissance Residence five-star complex where Christian was. A member of the Hatayspor staff, Taner Savut, was involved in the crash as well.
For Christiana, it would mean shouting out his name.” If the rescuers detected life, they would notify us. Then, they would bring out the corpse and ask you to confirm if it was a familiar face. It was heartbreaking to see a body bag arrive, whether it was a loved one or not,” she adds. In the evenings, we gathered around the fire like a family. You knew you would cry when you saw someone else verify a relative.
According to Christian Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, there were brief periods when they were hopeful that they would find him, and maybe even alive.
A member of the search crew had a shoe that appeared strikingly similar to Christian’s, according to Nana. It was a pair of his Yeezy sneakers that he tossed my way. Not long after that, we uncovered the second of the two, and it confirmed that we had been searching in the correct spot. While they slept in tents and automobiles, they received a call in the middle of the night informing them that a body had been found, ending days of searching among the debris for their cousin, who was primarily known for his charitable activities. It was Atsu’s corpse, unfortunately for them.

He continues, “Two officials brought a corpse bag to their attention.” Even before they were opened, we knew they weren’t the correct size or form for Christian because we had seen so many. However, its form told me it was Christian. Seeing him made us cry. After an earthquake in Turkey, Christian Atsu went missing a year ago. On February 8, 2023, the body of the former Black Stars footballer was discovered after being buried in debris for almost three days.
