Captain Smart was released after Rambo-style arrest near Kawukudi and his arrest sparked public dissatisfaction across the country. Others saw his arrest as intimidation of the media. Manasseh Azuri has indicated that if Captain Smart was arrested because of his comment about Galamsey and the mentioning of the president as being part then the move by the state was unfortunate because defamation is not a crime.  Others have indicated that Captain Smart and arrest is to divert attention from the Western Regional Minister’s case.
