Young Contender Aims to Oust NAPO as Manhyia South MP in NPP Primaries
- NAPO vs. Young Contender: Kwabena Addo Amankwah’s Bid for Manhyia South in NPP Primaries
In the political arena of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), a new contender has emerged with ambitions of securing the Manhyia South Parliamentary seat. Kwabena Addo Amankwah, a Financial Security Analyst, is gearing up to compete in the party’s parliamentary primaries scheduled for February next year. The current holder of the seat is Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, who is yet to announce his intentions regarding the next parliamentary election.
Uncertainty surrounds Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s decision, primarily due to speculation that he may be considered as a possible running mate to Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia if Bawumia secures the NPP primaries on November 4.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr. Addo Amankwah outlined his vision for the Manhyia South constituency, rooted in four key policy areas: education reforms, healthcare expansion, economic diversification, and security enhancement.
Regarding education, he acknowledged the NPP government’s achievements with the Free SHS policy and emphasized the need for constituents to fully capitalize on this opportunity to compete effectively in the job market. Mr. Amankwah plans to invest heavily in STEM education, providing resources such as laptops and financial support to tertiary students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics within the constituency. He has initiated an organization called STEM-TUTORS, which involves university students teaching coding and robotics to local children, aiming to nurture the next generation of tech-savvy leaders.
Healthcare accessibility is another significant aspect of his vision. Mr. Amankwah believes that every constituent deserves access to quality healthcare. He plans to organize health screenings and National Health Insurance Scheme registration within the constituency regularly. Additionally, part of the MP’s common fund will be allocated to support local clinics in purchasing advanced medical equipment through guaranteed loan programs, ultimately improving healthcare infrastructure and services.
Economic revitalization is one of Mr. Amankwah’s core principles. He advocates for a free-market economy and supports providing businesses with resources and better infrastructure. Leveraging the constituency’s royal palace, a significant asset for tourism, he aims to create a technological hub-website for local businesses to showcase their products and services globally. Furthermore, apprenticeship training programs and business loan initiatives for small enterprises within the constituency are part of his economic agenda.
Lastly, Mr. Amankwah emphasizes the importance of security in fostering a conducive environment for economic growth. He believes that ensuring the safety of people and businesses is essential for the development of any economy. If given the opportunity as a Member of Parliament, he pledges to work towards enhancing security, allowing businesses to operate without fear of robbery or interference, thus promoting economic growth and prosperity in Manhyia South.
As the NPP primaries draw closer, the constituents of Manhyia South face an intriguing decision that could potentially reshape the region’s future with fresh and innovative policies proposed by Kwabena Addo Amankwah.
