2023 BECE: If You Have Not Treated This Topics In Mathematics, Forget About Getting 1 In The BECE

There are some secrets that intelligent people will never tell you. One such secret is topics that you must take very seriously to pass your Maths Exams. You are therefore lucky if you are reading this article because I am going to share with you some of this secret

The first topic is “Decimal numbers, decimal approximations and operations on decimals”. What is Mathematics if there are no decimals? Infact, every number has a unique decimal form. The number 10 has a decimal form, 10.0 or 10.00 or even 10.000. This, having a solid foundation and knowledge on the concept of decimal is a plus for any student. Probability, percentages and it’s applications, statistics, plane geometry, linear equations and other complex maths concepts make use of decimals. This implies that you may understand these difficult concepts but if you cannot work with decimals, then my friend, you are doomed. Fractions can even be considered as a subset of decimals. That is, when given a fraction, you can convert it into a decimal and work with that decimal. Genius idea, right?

The second topic or concept that you must make sure that you are perfect in is, solving word problems. When I say word problems. I mean word problems. Before I go into details, let me test your word problem solving skill.

Identify the topic or maths idea needed to solve this word problem.

1) Idan has n oranges and m apples. He shared half of his oranges and one third of his apples. How many oranges and apples does he have left?

2) Kofi is two years older than his brother. The sum of their ages is 16. How old is Kofi?

3) The cost of one cup of rice in Ghana is at least GHc 10. How much will three cups of rice cost?

These are the answers

1. Algebraic expression and fraction

2. Linear equation

3. Linear inequality

If you scored less than 2, then you have a problem. Usually, examiners try to test the ability of students to apply what they have learnt using real life problems or experience. And these problems are stated in sentences. This is what we call word problems. Examiners test candidates if they can convert word problems into their equivalent maths equations or form. Therefore to be able to get a 1 in maths, know how to solve word problems.
