2024 BECE to Use Practical and Critical Thinking Questions Format
Following the change of the Basic 7-9 curriculums, WAEC will, from 2024, introduce a question format that will be practical, requiring critical thinking from students who will sit the BECE in 2024.
What this means is that the straightforward approach to questioning will be less visible in the BECE. The Education-News Consult, in its 2024 BECE mocks, has been using case studies, critical thinking, and a practical question approach. One example is the mock 2 question, which can be purchased at the BECE store. Look out for Mock 2.
Our mocks 3 and 4 combined the old and new question formats in the examination.
March 2024 onward will see the complete use of these question formats in all subjects (section B) by Education-News Consult to ensure parents and schools that buy our mocks for their candidates get greater value for money.
2024 BECE to Use Practical and Critical Thinking Questions Format: Details of the LATEST MEETING
At a BECE briefing by WAEC/GES held in Accra on February 21st, 2024, the following proved that effective 2024 BECE questions will be application, case studies, and critical thinking questions.
#1. Questions set by WAEC for 2024 will cut across all topics in the new curriculum.
This means the questions set by WAEC for the 2024 examination will cover nearly all topics in sections A (objective test) and B (subjective test). Students who want to pass the various subjects must have a good general knowledge of all topics to do well in Section A and be able to provide good answers to questions chosen in Section B.
#2 BECE Examiners have been tasked with setting CONTENT QUESTIONS
What this means is that the 2024 BECE questions submitted by examiners to WAEC for the exam must be questions that are more practical, which require students to do some level of critical thinking before they can answer them, rather than direct questions.
Barely three months before the 2024 basic school examination, WAEC has yet to release sample questions for schools and candidates. WAEC is also yet to provide guidance on the new BECE format to schools. Hence, schools are to ensure that as the candidates are writing various mock exams, which are mostly purchased from consortiums, THE QUESTIONS SHOULD BE CRITICAL THINKING/Practical ONES, but not direct questions as in the previous BECEs, so that the candidates will not be laid ambush when they meet such questions in the examination halls this year.
#3. Time allocated for answering BECE Practical and Critical Thinking Questions
Although the question format will change for the 2024 BECE, the time allocated for each subject at the examination will remain the same as the previous ones. Thus, mathematics and integrated science will be 2 hours each, while the others will remain 1 hour and 45 minutes per subject.
#4 Variations in old and new subjects
At the BECE this year, creative arts will be the newest subject added to the basic level examination. It is an additional subject to be written at the basic level. Career technology and computing are not entirely new subjects. There were formally BDT and ICT, respectively, and they will be administered under the new names.
#5. Completing the curriculum for the BECE
Teachers and schools have been tasked with ensuring that they complete the curriculum with their candidates for the examination. “Teachers, particularly at the JHS, are required to finish the curriculum with the students before the due date,” the report from the meeting that discussed the above stated.
Since the 2024 BECE will use practical and critical thinking question formats, schools and candidates must use sample questions of this nature to prepare for the BECE.
THE EXAMINATION DATE
