No Maths, No English, No SHS After 2026 BECE: The Strict CSSPS Placement Rules Explained

The reason you needed to stop everything and read this if you’re writing the 2026 BECE is that this post has very important information on English Language and Mathematics for candidates, schools, and parents. Do you know why passing Maths & English is essential for SHS placement for all 2026 BECE candidates?

Every 2026 BECE candidate looks forward to passing the examination, but not everyone will pass. Students’ grades and aggregates will vary from 10 ones to as high as an aggregate of 54. However, no matter your grades, failing Mathematics and/or English Language at the BECE will lead to serious disappointment for schools, teachers, parents, and, more importantly, the BECE candidate.

Failing any other subject, thus obtaining a grade 9 in any of the other subjects, is not as detrimental as getting the grade 9 in Mathematics and/or English Language. Mathematics and the English language determine the future and the likelihood of a student being placed in a free senior high school. Thus, all 2026 BECE candidates must first ensure they pass the Mathematics and English Language exams. Once you pass these two subjects, you must then ensure that you also pass Social Studies and Integrated Science.

Passing the four subjects above, also known as the core subjects, will help you qualify for school placement. However, if you obtain a grade of 9 in Mathematics and/or English Language, there will be no placement for you, and you will not enjoy free SHS in any form.

Should this happen, the candidate will have to resit the exam one year later and pass to qualify. Where a candidate is not ready to wait another year to resit the BECE, then he or she would have to be enrolled in a private SHS.

Parents are to encourage their learners and candidates to give their best in these moments of preparation to help the candidates pass these four important subjects. As a parent, if your 2026 BECE candidate does well in these core subjects and secures grades between 1 and 3, they (the candidates) will have an easy chance of getting placed. If your ward secures placement into a school of preference, it will save you from stress and the pressure that comes with doing self-placement and/or looking for a school in case they are not placed.
