New 2025 BECE school selection guidelines to be released tomorrow

The Minister of Education (MoE) has announced the introduction of new school selection guidelines, which will take effect with the 2025 BECE candidates. The new guidelines will be made public on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025. The MoE, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, will lead the program, which will be telecast live on GTV from 10 am.

These guidelines will guide headmasters, teachers, and parents in selecting a good and befitting senior high school for their wards as part of the 2025 BECE exam school selection and placement.

While the 2025 BECE starts on June 11th, candidates will be selecting schools into which they want to be placed after the examination.

The new 2025 BECE school selection process is expected to address and include the following additions:

  1. The introduction of selected private schools and their incorporation into the Free SHS. If this is added to the school selection guide and process, learners will have the chance of selecting at least one private school as one of their preferred Free SHS schools.
  2. The school selection processes are expected to be changed with new features such as the inclusion of private schools.
  3. The number of schools one can choose is also expected to be reduced from the current 11.
  4. The overall school selection process is expected to see a significant change.
  5. The form for selecting schools will also be changed given the above introductions.
  6. Other innovative introductions that will help offload students from oversubscribed schools to others are also likely to be considered.

The new guideline is expected to also allow the redistribution of school selection choices to lessen pressure on oversubscribed schools while also making other schools equally attractive to candidates.

The new guidelines on the selection of schools for 2025 BECE candidates are expected to make the process easy, simple, and efficient while removing bottlenecks such as those caused by wrong choices, self-placement, and others.

For private basic schools, one key change to the school selection and the associated placement will be the 30% slot allocated to learners from public schools in all Category A schools, which makes the school placement system very unfair to private school candidates who perform well in the exam.
