Every professional teacher dreams of a GES job, but there are four factual reasons why this remains a challenge for many unemployed graduates.

The dream of every graduate after school is to be gainfully employed. However, this is not always the reality. Only a lucky few find immediate employment—either through an employer or by starting their own venture—while others must hustle for years.

The unemployment rate is rising rapidly. Often, frustrated graduates sink into depression, questioning themselves: “Was going to school a blessing or a curse?”

A Word of Encouragement

My dear, if your first cast does not catch a fish, perhaps your second will yield a bountiful harvest.

Also, never be intimidated by the success of others, because the only difference between “Here” and “There” is the “T,” which stands for Time. Remember, you have to swim across the stream of failure before you can reach the banks of success.

In fact, many fail because they do not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. Never think the certificate you acquired is valueless; it will one day serve its rightful purpose and earn you a job.

4 Factual Reasons You Are Still Unemployed

Sometimes, delay is simply a test of patience that will eventually turn to gold. However, most graduates struggle to find opportunities for a long time due to the following reasons:

1. “Lightweight” Documents Many graduates think a certificate alone is enough to earn them a job. However, employers look for other ingredients—one of which is a well-written Curriculum Vitae (CV).

As a job seeker, your CV contains a summary of your personal and academic information and speaks volumes about you. The job market today is highly competitive; employers receive far more applications than necessary for a single role and have little time to review them in detail.

They often sample only the “well-organized” ones and discard the rest. You have to be unique and stand out. For instance, if all other applicants present plain, unformatted documents, use professional formatting and clarity to attract attention.

2. Reluctance to Volunteer Most students and graduates are reluctant to render their services for free. Volunteering exposes you to the job market and opens unimaginable doors. You may even be lucky enough to be retained as a permanent staff member if an opportunity arises.

Aside from that, even if you are not hired by that department, the knowledge gained will add weight to your CV. Most employers look for experienced hands; volunteering is an opportunity to gather first-hand, real-time job experience.

3. Poor Networking As a graduate, you need to be connected. It is concerning that in this technological era, some graduates do not have active social media profiles, nor do they check their WhatsApp groups or emails to stay informed about opportunities.

If you do not stay active and reach out to friends and colleagues, you will miss out on many opportunities. Networking through every possible means increases your chances of getting hired.

4. Lack of Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. It is the key to both personal and professional success.

Know who you are. As a job seeker, always be humble, tolerant, and smart. Do not wait for people to remind you of your responsibilities.

You are an asset to your family, not a liability. This is a season of success, and you will receive an appointment letter to set yourself up with a profitable venture very soon. Allah is involved. Aameen.
