6157 ghost workers removed from gov’t payroll- Ken Ofori Atta

The Finance Minister has revealed that the government has removed the names of 6157 ghost workers whose names were on the government’s payroll. According to him, this list of names were removed during the first half of the year, 2022.

Presenting the 2023 budget, Ken Ofori Atta added that measures are been put in place to ensure that payments made to “unapproved workers” will come to an end.

“During the first half of the year, the government expunged 6157 unapproved names from the payroll amounting to savings of GHc 14.61 million. In 2023, the National Payroll Database will be linked to the National Identification Authority (NIA) to prevent the recurrence of unapproved workers.”

The Honorable Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed frustration at how ghost workers have reduced the ability of the government to employ the youth in the public sector, hence freezing employment in the public sector.

“As govt announces a total freeze in public sector jobs, it is most depressing to note that the perennial canker of unapproved/ghost workers still dominates govt payroll. The 2023 Budget reveals that a massive 6,157 ghost workers were expunged in the first half of this year alone.

“Ghana needs a permanent scientific ghostbusters solution so we can replace the thousands of ghosts with real desperate but exceptionally talented unemployed youth instead of merely announcing a total freeze in public sector jobs.”, he wrote on his Facebook wall.
