GES receives financial clearance to pay teachers recruited in 2024

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has received financial clearance for the payment of salaries of the six thousand two hundred and forty-nine (6,249) teachers recruited in the 2024 academic year.

In a statement signed by its Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, GES said the clearance allows the Ghana Education Service to complete all necessary processes to ensure the staff receive their salaries.

“Although this financial clearance expires on 31st December, 2025, Management of GES will ensure that all staff are placed on the mechanized payroll in time for November 2025 payments.

Management thanks all staff for their dedication and remains committed to facilitating timely and accurate salary payments,” the Ghana Education Service said in the statement dated October 16, 2025.

The grant of financial clearance by the Ministry of Finance to the Ghana Education Service (GES) follows a picket by some teachers from the 2022 batch of the College of Education and university graduates at Jubilee House, who demanded payment of 13- and 9-month salary arrears, respectively.

The protest began early on Tuesday, September 30, at Obra Spot near Nkrumah Circle, with teachers marching to the Ministry of Education and later to the Ministry of Finance before heading to the presidency to press their demands.

Speaking to journalists, the lead convener of the protest, Simon Kofi Nartey, said the demonstration had become necessary after all efforts to resolve their concerns were ignored.

“We cannot continue working without salaries. This protest is our last option, and we are heading to the Jubilee House to demand the President’s intervention,” he stated.

The payment of the salaries also comes after the Ghana Education Service (GES) was directed to ensure that over 6,200 newly recruited teachers and non-teaching staff who recently picketed over unpaid salaries are paid by the end of November 2025.

At a press briefing in Accra, the Deputy Director-General of GES, Professor Smile Dzisi, confirmed the directive and outlined steps being taken to address the concerns of the aggrieved staff.

“Following the approval from Cabinet and our sector minister, Haruna Iddrisu, we have been directed to immediately complete the process of mechanization for all recruited staff who are yet to be paid. This payment will be made by the end of November 2025,” Prof. Dzisi announced.

The Deputy Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Professor Smile Dzisi, disclosed that a total of 6,249 teaching and non-teaching staff are affected, and the payment process has already begun.

“We are starting the process today to ensure that all 6,249 affected staff will be paid by the end of November,” she said.
