A young man in his twenties dies at a Chinese-operated galamsey site along China Road. His name has not been made public. The family of the young man is in too much shock to speak. The young man is a well-known person with a future, but he made a desperate choice.
As per eyewitnesses, the young man on Wednesday, April 8, went to the Chinese-owned mining site with a container. His alleged aim was to steal a liquid locally known as “diesel,” which is used in the mining operation. According to the eyewitnesses, the young man “wasn’t a violent person.” “He was just a boy who saw an opportunity. Maybe hunger. Maybe pressure. We may never know.”
However, what happened next has left the community in shock. Some security personnel at the site are said to have caught him. After being caught, he was to be handed over to the police, but witnesses said that he was badly beaten. repeatedly and then tied up. A detailed account of events was given to Green Gold FM/TV at Samreboi by the Assembly Member for the Tigarikrom Electoral Area, Hon. Evans Addie.
Hon. Evans Addie stated that “The victim was allegedly beaten multiple times and later restrained. He spent the night in their custody.” Over a period of hours, no one knew where he was. His family waited. His friends searched. Throughout this time, he remained tied at a site he tried to steal. It was only the next morning, Thursday, that the elders from the community came in to help, and he was released.
Neighbors say he was weak and barely responsive when he was brought back. Due to that, he was taken to his family home. Within hours, he was dead. One resident said that “he came home to die in his mother’s arms. That is not justice. That is not how you treat any human being.”
The family of the young man has since disclosed that, as per Islamic customs, burial arrangements will be carried out immediately. As a result, there will be no long autopsy or court process, only mourning, prayers, and burial.
