WAEC 2027 Key WASSCE (SC) Eligibility Requirements for Candidates

Students preparing to write the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (WASSCE-SC) have been reminded that completing the required Senior High School programme and meeting the Council’s registration conditions are essential for eligibility.

In a notice addressed to candidates, heads and proprietors of schools, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) outlined five key conditions that students must satisfy before they can be registered for the WASSCE-SC.

The notice also contains an important warning for schools and candidates who may not meet the requirements.

Students must complete the full three-year SHS programme

According to the notice, a candidate must complete the full three-year Senior High School programme in a recognised Senior High School, whether public or private.

For the cohort referenced in the notice, the programme runs from October 2024 to May 2027.

This requirement means students cannot simply seek to write the WASSCE-SC without completing the required three-year programme in a recognised school.

WAEC requires Continuous Assessment Scores

Another major requirement concerns students’ Continuous Assessment Scores (CASS).

WAEC states that candidates must have their CASS for each term or semester from Form 1 to Form 3 uploaded onto the Council’s CASS portal.

This makes the proper recording and submission of students’ continuous assessment results an important responsibility for schools throughout the three years of Senior High School.

Students and parents may therefore need to ensure that schools maintain accurate academic records throughout the programme rather than waiting until the final year.

Candidates must have CASS records for at least seven subjects

The notice further specifies the number of subjects for which candidates must have CASS records.

A candidate must have CASS records in a minimum of seven subjects and a maximum of eight subjects.

These should consist of:

• 4 Core Subjects
• 3 or 4 Elective Subjects

The requirement therefore affects both the core and elective subjects that form part of a candidate’s WASSCE registration.

Transfer students must provide relevant documentation

Students who transferred from one school to another also have an additional requirement.

Where applicable, candidates must have the relevant transfer documentation and CASS records from their previous school.

This means transferring to another Senior High School does not remove the requirement for proper academic and assessment records.

Schools receiving transfer students should therefore ensure that the necessary documentation and CASS information are properly accounted for.

Students who recently wrote WASSCE cannot register again as school candidates during the 2027 WASSCE (SC)

WAEC has also placed a restriction on candidates who have previously written the WASSCE-SC.

The notice states that a candidate must not have sat for the WASSCE (SC) previously within the last three years, 2024 to 2026.

This requirement is particularly important for schools during the registration process, as candidates who do not satisfy the eligibility conditions may not be qualified for registration as school candidates.

What happens if a candidate does not meet the requirements?

WAEC has provided an alternative for individuals who wish to write the examination but do not satisfy requirements 1 to 5.

According to the notice, such individuals may opt to write the WASSCE for Private Candidates (WASSCE-PC).

Unlike WASSCE for School Candidates, the private-candidate examination is conducted twice a year.

The notice identifies the two private-candidate periods as:

• PC 1: January to March
• PC 2: August to October

This provides an alternative pathway for eligible individuals who cannot register through the school-candidate route.

WAEC warns schools about registering ineligible candidates for 2026 WASSCE (SC)

One of the strongest messages in the notice is directed at schools.

WAEC states that the registration of all ineligible candidates shall be annulled by the Council.

The notice further warns that any school that registers unqualified candidates shall be de-recognised.

This places significant responsibility on school authorities to carefully verify candidates’ eligibility before submitting registrations.

Candidate biodata cannot be amended from the second year

The notice also contains a warning concerning candidates’ biodata.

WAEC states:

“Biodata of candidates will not be amended from the 2nd year.”

This means schools and candidates need to pay close attention to the accuracy of students’ personal information early in their Senior High School journey.

Errors in names and other biodata should not be left until the final year before being addressed.
