Most people agree that the 35-year-old superstar is one of the best football players ever. Messi knew what it was like to be great and famous at Barcelona, but that hasn’t always been the case with La Albiceleste.
But that changed last year when he led Argentina to win the Copa América 2021, right before he left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi and his national team won the continental championship, so now he wants to win the World Cup.
He has said, though, that this will be his last World Cup before it starts.
“This is definitely my last World Cup. He told journalist Sebastian Vignolo in an interview (thanks to Fabrizio Romano) that the decision had already been made.
Since he is already 35 and will be 39 when the next World Cup comes around, the decision was not a surprise. It’s still not clear if he will keep playing for the Argentina national team after the tournament in Qatar.
So far, the former captain of Barcelona has played 164 times for La Albiceleste and scored 90 goals. He is considered the best player to ever play for the country, along with Diego Maradona.

Messi’s first trip to the World Cup was in 2006. In 2014, the football legend was almost able to win the trophy, but Germany beat him in the last game.
This year, Argentina is in good shape going into the competition. Some of the big European teams are having trouble, so Messi and his teammates could go all the way in Qatar.
