Sad News: Ashaiman resident dies following brutal attack by soldiers

The Ashaiman community in Ghana has been in turmoil following the brutal attack by soldiers on residents over the alleged murder of a fellow officer by civilians in the area.
Recently, it was revealed that one of the victims of the attack passed away due to the incident. Alhaji Mohammed Musah was reportedly chased by armed military men, causing him to fall, and subsequently leading to his death.
It was also noted that he had a pre-existing medical condition of high blood pressure which was worsened by the incident.
Emmanuel Kumadzi, the lawyer and spokesperson for Ashaiman Lives Matter, corroborated this report to Citi News, along with Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Earnest Norgbey.
The incident occurred on March 7, 2023, a day after Ghana’s Independence Day celebration, when armed soldiers believed to have come from Michel and Burma Camps stormed Taifa and assaulted residents.
The Ghana Armed Forces have defended the operation, stating that it was sanctioned by the Military High Command.
However, both local and international human rights organisations, including Amnesty International and CHRAJ, have condemned the soldiers’ conduct, describing it as a flagrant violation of the human rights of innocent people.
During the attack, soldiers arrested a total of 184 residents and conveyed them to Burma Camp, with 150 being released first, and the remaining 134 released days later.
Six suspects were arrested in connection with the alleged murder of the soldier, Imoro Sheriff, and are currently assisting with investigations.
This incident has caused widespread outrage in the country, with many calling for justice for the victims and for those responsible for the attack to be held accountable.
It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring that the use of force by authorities is always necessary and proportionate.
