The “No End of Term Examination” is the latest update from the management of the Ghana Education Service for Basic Schools across the country.
In a letter dated 31st March 2021 with the title “End of term Examination,” GES said schools that went through the compulsory 8 weeks recovery should not conduct first term examinations for their students instead class exercises and class tests to assess pupils.
This directive covers learners from Kindergarten (KG) to JHS2.

The service further directed that the use of capitation grant for conducting examinations still holds.
Per this directive, teachers may conduct their usual class tests and use them as their end-of-term examinations. Thus no financial resources would be allocated by the government.
Basic school pupils have not written any end-of-term examination since December 2019. Pupils were promoted to their current classes after the Covid-19 lockdown, but they did not take the usual promotional examination. Stakeholders were expecting these learners to be accessed this after over a year.
Head Teachers are by this directed expected to conduct end of semester examination for only JHS3 students.
Schools are however required to break for the 2021 Easter Holidays on 1st April and resume on 7th April to continue academic work. The Easter break is for both basic and secondary schools under the Ghana Education Service.
Does The Directive, No End of Term Examination For Basic Schools, Affect SHS?
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has given no directive for second-cycle schools not to write examinations at the end of their semesters.
The GES has also released the final timetable or academic calendar for Form threes, Single Track Schools, SHS2 Green, and Gold Track, and SHS1 students who are to be grouped into Gold and Green Tracks by headteachers and their respective school management teams.
According to the GES, the new directive was because of the need to observe COVID-19 protocols of social distancing among others.
