Reasons Why Basic Schools Will Reopen On 3rd October For The 2023/2024 Academic Year

Latest information from the Ghana Education Service indicates that the 2023/2024 academic year for basic schools in Ghana will begin on Tuesday, 3rd October, 2023.

In a letter signed by the deputy director general of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh and forwarded to all district offices in the country, the Ghana Education Service explained why basic Schools will reopen on Tuesday, 3rd October. According to GES, it want to restore the old academic calendar.

The old academic calendar used to start from September each year. However, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it changed from September to January. GES has finally restored the academic calendar for basic schools.

Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform you that the reopening date for Basic Schools (KG, Primary & Junior High Schools) across the country for First Term of 2023/2024 Academic Year is 3rd OCTOBER, 2023. This brings back the academic calendar back to Pre-COVID-19 and we wish to also convey to all teaching and non-teaching staff the sincere appreciation of Management for their immense support during our efforts to ensure teaching and learning during the difficult period of our country. By this letter, Regional Directors of Education are requested to communicate this date to Metro/Municipal/ District Directors of Education to inform all Heads of Basic Schools to bring to the attention of parents/guardians and students to take note and prepare accordingly for a smooth and effective academic work.”

The 2022/2023 academic calendar for basic schools will officially come to an end on Thursday, 14th September, 2023. The academic year began in January, 2023 and it is expected to end this week.

Third term of the 2023 academic calendar started on Tuesday, 27th June, 2023. A total of 11 weeks were spent in the school.

This clearly means that basic schools will spend a total of 4 terms in 2023.

2023/2024 ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR SCHOOLS

The Ghana Education Service is yet to release the academic calendar for all schools. However, it is known the basic schools will resume on 3rd October, 2023. Senior High Schools will officially end their academic year on 30th November, 2023. Most batches have ended their academic year and are currently on vacation. However, SHS 1 students in double track schools will end theirs in November, 2023. The starting date for SHS 2023/2024 academic year is yet to be revealed by the Ghana Education Service.
