2020 WASSCE results: Free SHS did not compromise quality – VP

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice-President of Ghana has asserted that in spite of negative statements made after the Free SHS was introduced, the policy did not compromise the quality of education offered at the Senior High Level.

This is proven by the results of the first batch of Free SHS graduates who performed creditably at the 2020 WASSCE.

According to the Vice president, the results have shamed critics of the policy.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia made the remarks while speaking at the closing session of the National Chief Imam’s annual Ramadan lectures (Tafsir) in Accra.

He reiterated the government’s continuous support and promotion of quality education in the country.

In his view, the excellent results of the WASSCE 2020 graduates are a testament to the quality of the Free Senior High School program introduced by the Akufo Addo-led government.

Ghana’s WASSCE 2021 candidates obtained 411 8As out of the total of 465 obtained by candidates from the five West African countries.

He added that although Nigeria represented 70% of the total candidates who sat for the 2020 WASSCE, they could manage only 54 8As in the examination.

“When the Akufo-Addo government introduced the Free SHS policy, some people opposed it and said quality education would be compromised”

“But the 2020 WASSCE results show that if anything, the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) has improved the quality of education in Ghana,” the Vice President said at the ceremony.

He continued that “WAEC with countries like Sierra Leone, Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana; the results show that of the total number of students who took the exam, there was a total number of 465 who got A in all their 8 subjects”.
