Widespread Violence in Israeli-Hamas Conflict Claims Lives of 31  Journalists

The ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict has wrought a terrible cost on both sides, with civilian and military casualties, as well as the destruction of homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

However, the violence has also claimed another set of tragic victims: journalists who were simply seeking to report the events as they unfolded.

According to Naija News, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) confirmed on Monday that at least 31 journalists covering the Israeli-Hamas conflict have been killed.

The most recent count, according to the CPJ, reveals that 26 of the 31 killed were Palestinians, four were Israelis, and one was Lebanese.

Among the journalists who lost their lives are a well-known Palestinian filmmaker, Roshdi Sarraj, and Issam Abdallah, a Beirut-based videographer for Reuters.  Abdallah was killed near the Lebanon border by shelling that came from the direction of Israel.

Additionally, the CPJ reported that eight other journalists have been injured, while nine others are believed to be missing or detained.

The risks facing journalists are particularly acute in Gaza, where the conflict is most intense.

Journalists are attempting to cover the events in the face of an Israeli ground assault, devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, and extensive power outages.

These conditions all make it incredibly difficult to operate safely and effectively as a journalist.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) responded to the news, stating that it is looking into the claim.

The IDF also stated that it could not guarantee the safety of journalists operating in the Gaza Strip, which has left reporters in the region concerned for their safety.

The targeting of journalists covering conflict is not a new phenomenon.

However, the high number of journalists killed in the Israeli-Hamas conflict underscores the level of violence and danger that journalists often face in these situations.
