Let 2023 BECE graduates (SHS1) go to school in January 2024

Please,  can’t our children go to school in January 2024? This is one of the questions many parents are asking as the GES delays the release f school placement and the fact that students will be in school for about two weeks and break for the festive season.

Parents’ Plea to GES for 2023 BECE Graduates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has recently announced that the 2023 BECE graduates will commence their Senior High School (SHS1) education on December 4th, 2023. However, a group of parents have called on the GES to reconsider this decision and allow the students to start school in January 2024 instead.

Some of these requests have been left on posts published by GhanaEducation.org

The parents argue that the current timeline is too rushed, given the delay in releasing placement and will not give the students enough and parents time to prepare for the academic rigors of SHS. They also point out that many of the students are still traumatized from the BECE exams results and need more time to adjust before starting a new school year.

In addition, the parents argue that the early start date will put an unnecessary financial strain on families. They explain that they will have to pay for school fees, uniforms, and other supplies in a very short period of time.

The debate over the start date for the 2023 BECE graduates is likely to continue in the coming weeks when the school placements are finally out. However, it is clear that the parents’ concerns are valid and should be carefully considered by the GES. But there are others who are looking forward to reporting to school from December 4th.

Here are some of the key arguments against delaying the start date for the 2023 BECE graduates:

  • It would disrupt the school calendar and make it difficult for schools to plan for the next academic year.
  • The GES calender has been fixed and cannot be altered easily.
  • It would delay the students’ progress and could put them behind their peers.
  • It would create unnecessary anxiety for students and parents.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to delay the start date for the 2023 BECE graduates is up to the GES. However, it is important to weigh the arguments carefully and make a decision that is in the best interests of all stakeholders.
