The National Teaching Council (NTC) has released the 2024 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination results for cohorts 2 and 3 who sat the examination. In a press release by the NTC, it is indicated that a total of 9556 teachers, representing 47.4%, failed the examination, while the remaining 10625 (52.67) passed out of the 20181 candidates who sat the NTC-administered examination.

Again, 892 teachers who sat the examination did not pass any of the subjects administered; 2641 passed just 1 subject, while 6023 teachers managed to excel in 2 subjects.

Per the press release, some 12392 (61.8%) teachers passed the General Professional Knowledge (GPK) paper, and 67/2 percent of candidates who took the Early Childhood/Grade Pedagogy passed the exam.

All candidates can check their results on the official NTC portal at www.exama.ntc.gov.gh. Candidates are to use the pins issued to them during registration or their examination index numbers and phone numbers.

The NTC advised candidates to print out their provisional results after checking it on the portal.

Teachers who took the primary and JHS pedagogy were numbered 14706; however, 14421, representing 98.1*, passed the examination.

For teachers who were administered the SHS Pedagogy examination, 3735 (83.8%) passed the examination.

In all, 2023 GTLE 3 was administered to both students taking the examination for the first time and those doing a re-sit. Out of the 4724 first-time candidates, only 45.1% passed (2130), while 2594 (54.9%) failed. However, 690, 831, and 1073 passed none, passed I subjects, and passed 2 subjects, respectively.

Ina related development the Teacher Licensure Examination has been in the news in recent weeks after former President John Mahama promised to cancel it if re-elected in the 2024 general elections. Mr. Mahama raised concerns about the need for an additional test for Colleges of Education students after completing their courses and exams.

While Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) call for the abolition of the licensure exams, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) opposes the proposal, asserting that the policy is beneficial and should be retained.
