In a startling case that has captured the attention of the public, an 18-year-old student from Adanwomase Senior High School, Gabriel Osei Kwame, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor.
This severe sentence was handed down by His Honour Festus Nukunu at a Circuit Court in Old Tafo, Ashanti Region, after Gabriel was convicted of robbing a teacher, Matilda Boatema.
The incident, which occurred on the morning of March 4, 2024, saw Gabriel assaulting Matilda with a jackknife and robbing her of her Infinix Hot 9 smartphone, cash, rice, stew, and some documents near her residence.

The distressing nature of this crime, especially given the relationship between a student and a teacher, has led to widespread discussion about student conduct, teacher security, and the justice system’s response to crimes involving young offenders.
After Matilda reported the robbery to the Asonomaso police, a swift investigation led to Gabriel Osei Kwame ‘s arrest on March 25. Despite initially denying any involvement, Gabriel ultimately confessed to the crime, admitting he sold the stolen phone for a mere 250 cedis, a fraction of its value.
Unfortunately, his cooperation with the police did not extend to recovering the stolen items, further complicating the case.
Inspector Alfred Aruk, the state prosecutor, outlined the sequence of events leading to Gabriel Osei Kwame ‘s confession and the subsequent inability to recover the stolen phone.
This case highlights several critical issues, including the challenges law enforcement faces in tracking and recovering stolen property, the implications of youth involvement in crime, and the broader societal concerns over security and discipline in educational institutions.
Gabriel Osei Kwame ‘s harsh sentence reflects the gravity with which the court views robbery, particularly involving weapons, and serves as a cautionary tale to others.
