Ghana Education News, September 2, Prof. KwesiOpokuAmnakwa, The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has disclosed that close to 15,000 teachers have been upgraded when they do not merit it.
He made this revelation at a press conference organized on Friday, August 27th, 2021 while responding to questions related to Pre-tertiary education in the country.
He said the close to 15,000 teachers undeservedly upgraded were teachers who embarked on further study without any approval from the GES.
He added that those upgraded did not undergo the necessary processes before and during the upgrade process.
The GES policy and principle of the upgrade should not have been permitted however, the GES met teacher unions and other stakeholders who pleaded for this category of teachers to be considered.

It has been the GES policy that, teachers who fail to follow due process and end up upgrading will not be considered for the necessary upgrade. This created tension within the teaching service for many years.
However, the Director Generals stated that teachers were undeservedly upgraded has not been welcomed with any excitement among teachers who feel the statement was needless.
