Historic Statistics and Data of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School
History About Aburi Girls’ Senior High School
With just seven students, Aburi Girls Senior High School was formally established in 1946 as a secondary school for girls.
However, the Basel Missionaries founded a primary school for girls at their mission station inside the town in 1852, which is when the school’s history actually begins. The primary school remained open until the Scottish Mission took control of it during World War I. Along with a kindergarten class and a middle school for girls, teacher-training programmes were started in the 1920s. Secondary classes were then offered in 1946, alongside the teacher-training programme.
When the Basel Mission and the Scottish Mission, the school’s partner missions, left in 1950, the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast (now Ghana) assumed management of the institution. In 1954, the secondary school was moved to its current location on the outskirts of Aburi after being physically divided from the teacher training classes. Up until 1958, Form 1 through Form 5 classes were offered. Then, a Sixth Form was introduced. The current senior high school system is a three-year programme.
The Methodist Training College, which was located on the school’s southern edge, closed in 1972, therefore Joyce Asibey, the nation’s first Ghanaian headmistress, started talks with the Methodist Church to buy the college’s property for the school.
Form one students were housed in the campus since it had a dining hall, dorms, and classrooms. This was done to lessen bullying incidents. This arrangement was discontinued due to the increase in population in the 1990s, and the old “Metico” building, together with the entire compound, is now a real house known as Irene Anderson House. A mile or two south of Aburi, on the easternmost ridge of the Akuapem Mountains, is where the school may be found.
