Access Bank Appoints Veteran Banker To Replace Wigwe As Acting CEO
Access Bank has appointed Bolaji Agbede as their acting CEO to replace Herbert Wigwe after his sudden death, which has left many people in a state of shock.
Bolaji Agbede has been named the acting group chief executive officer (GCEO) of the holding company Access Holdings Plc, according to Monday’s announcement. Herbert Wigwe, the company’s former group chief executive officer, tragically passed away in a U.S. helicopter crash on Friday, prompting this appointment.

Along with Mr. Wigwe’s wife, son, and former Nigeria Exchange Group chairman Abimboloa Ogunbanjo, four others passed away. In a statement released on Monday, Access Holdings Plc acknowledged the passing of its former group chief executive officer, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, and announced the appointment of Ms. Bolaji Agbede as acting group chief executive officer. This appointment follows an earlier announcement from the company’s board of directors dated February 11, 2024.
With approximately 30 years of expertise in banking and business consulting, Ms. Agbede became an Assistant General at Access Bank in 2003. Before her current post, she worked for the bank in several capacities, including as Head of group Human Resources, from 2010 to 2022. In 2022, she was named the company’s founding Executive Director, Business Support. In 2002, she earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Cranfield University in the UK.

The statement added that she is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Management in the UK and that she has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Lagos. The Nigerian Central Bank must first approve the nomination.”The appointment of Ms. Agbede is in alignment with our robust succession planning practices,” stated Abubakar Jimoh, chairman of the firm.”
