Adjaye Associates Unveils Groundbreaking Children’s Cancer Research Centre in Ghana

Adjaye Designs Cancer Center

Adjaye Designs Cancer Center

Adjaye Designs Cancer Center as Adjaye Associates has revealed its design for a transformative healthcare project in Ghana—the International Children’s Cancer Research Centre (ICCRC). Located in Kyebi, within the lush Eastern Region and nestled along the eastern slopes of the Atewa Range, this visionary facility will be the first in West Africa dedicated entirely to the treatment and research of childhood cancers.

Commissioned by the Wish4Life Foundation, the ICCRC aims to become a beacon of hope for children and families across the region. Currently, the survival rate for pediatric cancer in West Africa hovers around 10 percent. This centre has set its sights on dramatically improving those outcomes—working toward survival rates closer to the 80 percent seen in countries like the United States.

But ICCRC is more than just a hospital. It’s designed as an integrated space for healing, teaching, research, and community support. Drawing on traditional Ghanaian beliefs that health is tied to personal and communal harmony, the architecture blends modern medicine with cultural and environmental sensitivity.

The masterplan embraces biophilic design, allowing the centre to coexist with the surrounding forest. Visitors first enter a calming Welcome Centre that begins their journey into a nurturing environment. Throughout the campus, courtyards based on the Akan concept of Fihankra—a traditional family compound—offer places of peace and reflection for patients, families, and staff.

Construction materials are sourced locally—rammed earth, timber, clay bricks—crafted by Ghanaian hands. Even the architectural features tell a story: patterned concrete screens on the buildings echo the intricate designs of Kente cloth, connecting the structure to Ghana’s cultural heritage.

The campus will include a children’s hospital, research labs, training facilities, housing for staff and families, a chapel, and a family support center—all designed as one cohesive, sustainable ecosystem powered by solar energy and natural ventilation. ICCRC represents a bold step forward for pediatric healthcare in Africa—deeply local, globally informed, and built to last.
