Akufo Addo’s Former Minister Officially Announced His NPP Flagbearership Bid
Joe Ghartey, MP for Essikado-Ketan Constituency, has declared his intention to run in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries this year.
The former Attorney General believes he has what it takes to lead the party into the presidential elections in 2024.
“I am standing for the presidential, flagbearership [race] of the NPP,” he said in an interview with Takoradi-based Connect FM on the sidelines of an Ahanta West MP Ebenezer Kojo Kum-organized Thanksgiving Service.
“I believe I am qualified. I am confident that I have the experience, capacity, humility, and sense of service to serve the people of Ghana.”
Joe Ghartey’s announcement follows the declarations of some party heavyweights to run in the primaries later this year.
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and Dr. Afriyie Osei Akoto recently resigned from the government to pursue personal interests, one of which is running in the primaries.
Mr. Kyerematen has since declared his intention to not only lead the NPP into next year’s elections but also to become President of Ghana after December 20, 2024.
Joe Ghartey served as Minister of Railways Development during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-first Addo’s term, which he described as one of the most difficult infrastructure portfolios.
“I am happy and proud of what I did at Railway and I thank God that over the years, he has given me training, care, and humility to serve.
“I am running because the time has come for a leader like Joe Ghartey.”
He stated that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has made references to his “firm” rulings while serving as the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
