AMECO faces infrastructure challenges amid growing student population
The E.P. College of Education, Amedzofe (AMECO), nestled in the scenic Ho West District of the Volta Region, is grappling with significant infrastructure challenges that threatens its mission to deliver quality education.
As the institution’s student population balloons to 1,096, its decades-old auditorium, with a seating capacity of just 250, falls drastically short of meeting the needs of its burgeoning student body.
This inadequacy has forced the college to conduct official functions outdoors, subjecting attendees to the unpredictable whims of Amedzofe’s climate.
In response to this pressing issue, the college’s leadership, spearheaded by Principal Dr. Dickson Tsey, has proactively sought solutions.
The management has finalized the architectural design and bill of quantities for a new, state-of-the-art auditorium.
This ambitious project now awaits financial backing from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) or contributions from philanthropic entities and individuals willing to invest in the future of education at AMECO.
The revelation of these challenges and plans came during the college’s 17th matriculation ceremony, which saw 240 new students, evenly split between genders, embark on their educational journeys in various Bachelor of Education programs.
These programs cater to a spectrum of educational levels and specializations, including Junior High School Education (with an option in French), Upper Primary Education, and Early Grade Education.
AMECO’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity is evident in its admissions policies.
The institution prides itself on offering tertiary education opportunities to women through its Gender Inclusive Policy and extends concessions to applicants from less-privileged backgrounds and those with exceptional talent in sports, provided they meet the general entry requirements.

The matriculation event also marked the launch of AMECO’s ambitious five-year strategic plan, aimed at elevating the college to a center of excellence in teaching, learning, and infrastructure.
This comprehensive strategy emphasizes stakeholder engagement, quality assurance, and the promotion of equitable access, inclusivity, and gender diversity.
Dr. Tsey articulated a vision of AMECO as an incubator for innovation and research, where students and faculty collaborate on transformative projects.
This vision is supported by a commitment to modernize the curriculum, integrate cutting-edge technology into the learning experience, and foster a dynamic environment conducive to academic and personal growth.
The strategic plan’s unveiling underscored the college’s dedication to preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving global landscape, as highlighted by Rev. Dr. Lawson Kwaku Dzanku, chairman of the AMECO Governing Council.
This forward-thinking blueprint seeks not only to address the immediate infrastructural needs but also to cement AMECO’s status as a premier institution for teacher education in Ghana and beyond.
