Diplomatic Move: North Korea Shuts Embassy in Uganda
In a strategic move aimed at increasing the efficiency of its external institutions, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea, has officially closed its embassy in Uganda. This development follows a meeting between President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the outgoing North Korean Ambassador, Jong Tong Hak, during which they bid farewell and discussed the future of bilateral relations between the two nations.
Despite the physical closure of the embassy, Ambassador Jong Tong Hak assured President Museveni that the strong friendship and bilateral relations between Uganda and North Korea would continue.
He emphasized that the bonds between the two nations would not be severed and expressed his affection for Uganda, where he had resided for many years. The Ambassador conveyed the commitment of the North Korean government to further strengthen and develop these relations through alternative means.
During their meeting, President Museveni expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Hak for his dedicated ten years of service in Uganda and wished him well in his future endeavors. The President’s tweet following the meeting conveyed his appreciation for the outgoing North Korean Ambassador.
Ambassador Hak disclosed that their diplomatic connections with Uganda would be maintained through Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea. He announced that the North Korean Ambassador to Uganda’s successor would soon present his credentials to President Museveni, ensuring a seamless transition of diplomatic ties.

President Museveni received praise from the North Korean government for his consistent support in promoting peaceful efforts to achieve a harmonious unification of the Korean Peninsula. They particularly commended his memorable speech at the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, during which he expressed gratitude to North Korea, an address that brought happiness and gratitude to their government.
This development marks the second embassy closure in Uganda this year, with Norway previously announcing its decision to close its embassy by the end of July 2024. Similar to North Korea, Norway has pledged to maintain cooperative relationships with Uganda despite the closure of its embassy.
North Korea’s decision to close its embassy in Uganda is part of a strategic measure to streamline its diplomatic presence in Africa. While the physical presence of the embassy may have ended, the commitment to strengthen and continue bilateral relations remains unwavering, a testament to the enduring ties between nations in an ever-changing global landscape.
