Appear before me in two weeks or sack yourself – Otumfuo to Kwaprahene

In a significant development in the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has summoned Kwaprahene Baffour Adugyemfu Kumani, one of his subchiefs, to appear before him within two weeks or face the possibility of being relieved of his duties.

At a council meeting held on October 20, 2023, the Asantehene made it clear that the Kwaprahene must present himself without fail to respond to allegations of double land sales and violations of The Great Asante Oath (Otumfuo Ntamkese). Some media outlets have reported that the final deadline for his appearance falls on Friday, November 3, 2023, and that the accused chief must go through the Akwamu division.

In a video shared by Opemsuo Radio, an affiliate of Manhyia, Otumfuo expressed his displeasure and frustration, stating, “Kwaprahene knows why I’m looking for him. He knows I’m looking for him because of the land issue. That’s why he is avoiding me, claiming illness, thinking he can outsmart me.”

The Asantehene continued, “Go and bring him. I will not accept any excuses from him. When he was young, he sold my land without giving me my money. I forgave him, but you see, the issue has resurfaced.”

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Otumfuo set a clear ultimatum, saying, “In two weeks, if he doesn’t show up, he should abdicate the throne, and all the elders under him will be summarily dismissed. Just two weeks, regardless of his condition, he should show up.”

The Asantehene also directed his message to the elders, expressing his disappointment in their inability to curtail the Kwaprahene’s actions, despite his previous warnings. The situation underscores the gravity of the land dispute and its potential repercussions within the traditional leadership of the Ashanti Kingdom.

As the two week deadline looms for Kwaprahene, the outcome of this ultimatum will be closely watched, as it could reshape the leadership structure within the kingdom, and serves as a reminder of the Asantehene’s commitment to upholding traditional values and accountability.
