Breaking News: Govt Officially Suspends VAT on Electricity

The government has formally halted the implementation of the 15 percent value-added tax on domestic electricity consumption.

The Ministry of Finance has thus instructed both the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company to halt the imposition of the tax.

The Ministry of Finance issued a press release on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, stating this.

The suspension, according to the Ministry, is intended to facilitate extensive discussion and to garner the support of industry players and trade unions, given the serious concerns raised regarding its impact on consumers and enterprises.

The two are related. The MoF, on behalf of the government, would like to notify ECG and NEDCO of the decision to suspend the implementation of the VAT directive pending further discussions with key stakeholders, including organized labor.

There is a 3. The Ministry anticipates that these interactions will yield fresh, robust, and inclusive strategies for closing the current fiscal chasm, while bolstering financial stability.

Earlier reports indicated that the government was contemplating negotiations with the International Monetary Fund to reach a consensus on the anticipated revenue shortfall, which would allow for the abolition of the VAT on electricity.

The Ministry expects these engagements to birth innovative, robust, and inclusive approaches to bridging the existing fiscal gap, while bolstering economic resilience.

A nationwide demonstration on February 13, 2024, was planned by the labor movement, calling on the government to revoke the directive to implement the 15% VAT on residential electricity consumption.

Members wore red bands at work earlier this week to signal the possibility of a nationwide strike if the VAT directive isn’t revoked after the demonstration.

On February 6th, 2024, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II hosted an event to launch a book called “History of Ashanti.” The book was written by Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II.

The event was important because it was also a symposium about the 150th anniversary of the Sargrenti War. I am thankful to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for letting me launch this great book.

The book called “History of Ashanti” explains the rich history and culture of Ashanti Kingdom. This explains the complicated history, customs, and important events that have shaped the Ashantis over the years. It also teaches about being committed and proud of your country.

This is a story about a kingdom that has been around for a long time. I want other authors of children’s books to make it easier for kids to read, so they can learn more about the Ashanti Kingdom.

King Charles has Been Diagnosed with Cancer

King Charles has Been Diagnosed with Cancer

Buckingham Palace said on Monday that King Charles, 75, will delay his public duties while he undergoes treatment after being diagnosed with a cancerous tumor.

The king, who took over as king in September 2022 after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, is “very optimistic” about his treatment and is looking forward to returning to full royal duties as soon as possible, according to the palace.

Charles underwent a corrective procedure for a benign, enlarged prostate after spending three nights in the hospital. A separate issue of concern had been spotted during the hospital visit, but the palace didn’t provide further details beyond stating that the king suffered from a “type of cancer.”

The palace said that His Majesty has begun a regular treatment regimen today, during which he has been advised by doctors to delay public-facing duties. His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork throughout this period.

As a result, Charles will continue to meet with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whereas his wife, Queen Camilla, will continue to fulfill her duties.

The news comes just days after Charles and his daughter-in-law left the same hospital where they had both undergone planned treatments.

The Princess of Wales and the wife of the heir to the British throne, Prince William, spent two weeks in the hospital after abdominal surgery for an unknown, but non-cancer condition.

The royals usually keep their health information secret, considering it a private matter, but Charles has been forthcoming about his recent treatment.

The Queen’s decision to disclose his diagnosis is intended to avoid speculation and to aid public understanding for all those around the globe who are affected by cancer, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.

Sunak, the leader of the government, wished the King a speedy recovery, saying, “I’m certain he’ll be back to full strength in no time, and I’m sure the whole country will be thinking of him.”

The king’s cancer diagnosis has reached the rest of the royal family. A person close to the Duke of Sussex told me that Prince Harry, his younger son, will be heading to the UK to see him in the coming days.

After stepping down from royal duties in 2020, Harry and his American wife Meghan now reside in California, along with their two children, in the state of California.

The coronation, Britain’s biggest ceremonial occasion in ages, was the highlight of Charles’ first year as heir.

While there were rumors that the environmentalist would bring a radical overhaul of the monarchy when he was king, Charles has generally followed the lead of his mother, while also trying to add his own spin.

Most Brits, according to polls, are in favor of his reign so far, albeit the younger generation is less enthusiastic.

The ongoing fallout between his son Harry and the rest of his family was the biggest shadow over the royals before his recent health issues.

Re-submission of Public Universities Bill is a Cause of Dismay for UTAG

Re-submission of Public Universities Bill is a Cause of Dismay for UTAG

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is appalled by the government’s decision to resubmit the rejected Public Universities Bill to Parliament for consideration in the upcoming 8th session.

They expressed deep concern as they observed the government’s determination to push through this controversial bill, despite widespread opposition from the university community and the higher learning environment. The absence of consultation or engagement with UTAG, the primary stakeholders and beneficiaries of such legislation, really irks us.

The House of Representatives resumed its sessions today, February 6, following a brief pause. The earliest start time for the inaugural session of the fourth session of the eighth parliament is 10:00 am.

A total of 82 bills are expected to be presented to the House during this meeting, according to a statement issued by Parliament on February 5, 2024.

The house will take into consideration the Aged Persons Bill, 2023.
The Advertising Council Bill for 2023, the Consumer Protection Bill for 2023, the Public University Bill for 2023, and the Ghana Road Fund (Amendment) Bill for 2023 are some of the bills that will be introduced in the coming years.

The House will be tackling twelve (12) bills that are currently in committee during this session.

The Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill, 2023 (Committee on Gender and Children) and the Social Protection Bill, 2023 (Committee on Gender and Children) are two such bills.

The House will take a break before the general elections to work on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (Amendment) Bill, 2021, and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which are private member’s bills.

The UTAG said in a statement that it strongly opposes the passage of the PUB in its current form and demands its immediate removal from the Parliament.

A lack of consultation with UTAG and an alarming disregard for the concerns of the university community demonstrate a disregard for the principles of democratic governance and academic autonomy.

As stakeholders dedicated to advancing higher education in Ghana, we call on the government to take action.
The government needs to rethink its approach and have a meaningful conversation with UTAG.
Other relevant parties, including TUTAG, are involved.

Our public universities’ future and the caliber of higher education in Ghana hinge on cooperative efforts that acknowledge the perspectives and expertise of all parties.

The group said they’re committed to protecting the autonomy and integrity of our public universities, and they’ll keep pushing for policies that uphold the ideals of academic freedom, institution autonomy, and affordable learning for everyone.

Training for a Teaching License will Begin at UEW

Training for a Teaching License will Begin at UEW

The Ghana Association of Private Schools (GNACOPS) and the University of Education (UEW) have agreed to train private school teachers to get a teaching license from the National Teaching Council (NTC)

The agreement for private school teachers was agreed on during a meeting between Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah, the leader of GNACOPS, and Professor Hinneh Kusi, the head of the university. They talked about important things related to education.

We talked about starting education leadership training for private school owners and administrators to follow the rules and provide good education.

The talk talked about goals for training programs, ways to work together, creating curriculum, how to get resources, and how to get money. We talked about ways to keep checking and evaluating how well students are doing in school so they can keep getting better.

The news comes after a group of six teachers from UEW created a program to teach more private school teachers who didn’t have any formal education. They did this through the Ghana National Council of Private Schools.

The people in the University who made the program are Professor George Kankam, who heads the School of Graduate Studies, Professor Samuel K. Hayford, and Professor Samuel K. Hayford, who heads the Faculty of Education; and Professor Samuel K. Hayford, who heads the Science Education Department.

Others are Prof. Ruby Hanson, Prof. Sakina Acquah, Dr. Yayra Dzakadzie, and Dr. Richard Addai-Mununkum.

UEW will teach untrained teachers in private schools in Ghana for three semesters. The teachers will be trained to meet the teacher standards set by the Ministry of Education through the National Teaching Council (NTC)

The trainees would do the program for three sessions that lasted six weeks each. Each semester, they would get 27 credits. The trainees would be tested after each session, and their grades would add up over three sessions. The trainees who did well would get a Diploma in Basic Education.

If you meet the minimum requirements, you will automatically be accepted into the program. If you are over 25, you can take a test called the Mature Students Entrance Exam and get admitted if you do well.

But people who don’t fit into one of the two groups will have the chance to take an Access Course for three weeks. After that, they will be checked and accepted as qualified students.

If you finish the Diploma in Basic Education, you can go on to the Bachelor of Education in Basic Education. You need to pay for one year more to get the degree. If you have a degree but don’t have a job, you can get a postgraduate diploma in Education through the program to become a professional.

Start an Enrolment Drive for BECE Graduates who Haven't been Placed Yet

Graduates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) who haven’t been accepted into senior high schools (SHS) should go to the nearest education office to apply for Enrolment.

This includes female candidates who are at home because of having a baby, even if they did well in the 2023 BECE.

The Ministry of Education is trying to get more BECE graduates into SHS.

Stephen Abamfo, who is in charge of education in Greater Accra, told the Daily Graphic this during a speech and prize giving event at Odorgonno Senior High School on Saturday.

Placement for BECE exams.
A total of 600,900 people took the BECE school test.

This year, 585,797 people got a job out of 598,839 people who were tested by the West African Examination Council (WAEC)

About 477,772 students, or 81.56 percent, were automatically sent to a school they chose.

But only 18.44 per cent of the qualified people could be chosen.

All such students were, therefore, asked to do self-placement to select from available schools.

The schools’ placement secretariat has not been able to furnish the Daily Graphic with the latest figures on how many of those not placed had been able to achieve placement.

Mr Abamfo indicated that the sector minister had charged the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to get in touch with the regional and district directors of education, as well as circuit supervisors, to embark on an enrolment drive.

“There are some students who passed the BECE but were not able to get placement; they are all invited.

My office is open; they should all come so that we find them schools to attend. We don’t want to leave any student unattended.

Every student must get into school,” he emphasised.

He said those visiting the education office should produce their BECE results for action to be taken on them.

“We have some girls who were pregnant and have given birth and are at home (drop-outs).

We have opened our gates; they should let us know so that we bring them on board, for them to also get access to school.

That is the good thing the government is doing,” he said.

He said the BECE graduates had up to the end of February to take advantage of the opportunity for the BECE graduates Enrolment.

More than 600 Students to Benefit from Educational Scholarship

More than 600 Students to Benefit from Educational Scholarships

Over 600 Ghanaian students are to benefit from scholarship packages from the Jospong Group of Companies to study at the RUDN University in Russia over the next five years. The Educational  Scholarship awarded – in the areas of Agriculture, Information Technology, Integrated Waste Management and Climate Change studies – will benefit 120 Ghanaian students each year (2024-2029).

This historic initiative was finalized last Friday in Accra after the Jospong Group, through the Asian and African Consortium (AAC) – a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the RUDN University in Accra.

The landmark event was witnessed by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, and the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov.

Applauding the Jospong Group for pioneering this initiative, Mr. Bagbin is hopeful that Ghana’s best days are yet to come.

“This is the beginning of great things to happen,” he stated.

He added that Russia has always been a friend to Ghana, and commended them for taking the relationship from the government level to the private sector.

Executive Chairman-Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, assured stakeholders of his company’s readiness to absorb the students after their education is completed.

“Gone are the days when you finish your education and stay behind because of a lack of opportunities back home; I want to assure you that Jospong is ready to work with you, so come and let’s develop Ghana together,” he assured.

CEO of the Asian African Consortium, Mrs. Adelaide Siaw Agyepong, noted in her remarks, noted that “this is a unique collaboration to enhance climate change mitigation and agriculture in the country.”

She explained that the knowledge and skills gained will be most beneficial to Ghana.

She added that the initiative will open the door for talented and passionate individuals who would have faced many challenges in accessing quality education outside Ghana.

Not only that, but she also highlighted the knowledge transfer that this collaboration will bring to beneficiaries and the country.

Furthermore, she encouraged the beneficiary students’ return to Ghana after their skill acquisition so they could help with development.

Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum praised Dr. Adjepong, and observed that this partnership is novel and unique because a private actor is leading the charge for Educational  Scholarship of such magnitude.

“The better days of our nation are ahead of us, and Jospong is showing that a private sector entity is more than capable of changing the narrative,” he noted.

A representative of RUDN University, Dr. Masamba Kakh, noted in brief remarks noted that RUDN University is a gateway to the Russian education system and Russian industry – which aim to prepare specialists specifically for industrial projects.

“We try to link tertiary education in Africa with industrial companies in the way that that education system and education process support the development of specialists – who can seamlessly go into employment with the right skill set of theoretical and practical knowledge,” he emphasised.

The Russian Ambassador to Ghana assured of the Embassy’s readiness to swiftly process beneficiary students’ documents to enable them to travel to Russia for studies.

He added that it is imperative for every country to be food-sufficient, and commended Jospong for supporting Ghana’s food security agenda.

This initiative was attained in collaboration with the National Service Secretariat, Ghana Scholarship Secretariat (Office of the President), University of Ghana, Pentecost University, University of Development Studies, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, University for Development Studies, and other partners.

The initiative also includes competitive Olympiad exams in Integrated Waste Management and Climate Change.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step in enhancing educational opportunities for Ghanaian youth. The ceremony signified the commencement of a partnership aimed at creating lasting impacts in agriculture, information technology, integrated waste management and climate change studies.

Aligned with its commitment to meaningful initiatives, the Jospong Group has engaged key institutions such as the National Service Secretariat, the Educational  Scholarship Secretariat, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Pentecost University in steering this scholarship initiative.

Representing RUDN University was a 7-member delegation led by Prof. Sergey Elansky, a renowned expert in Agrobiotech Technology and a consultant for major agricultural holdings in Russia.

In a significant gesture, over 500 National Service personnel engaged in the agricultural sector were present to witness this historic event.

Ghana Needs Honest, Competent Govt to Turn Economy Around

Ghana Needs Honest, Competent Govt to Turn Economy Around — John Mahama

The presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress  (NDC), John Mahama, has said that Ghana needs a competent, selfless, honest and truthful government that will come and lead it out of the mess it has gotten into under the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administration.

The head of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has lost its way in governing the economy due to greed and corruption, and he says it’s only the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that can give the people hope when they get their hands on power again in 2024.

As a result, the mascot of the NDC urged citizens not to give up hope, but to overwhelmingly support the NDC in order to free them from the fetters of the government.

READ: Free SHS is expensive – Parents bemoan as over 137,000 students fail to report to school due to lack of funds

The Mahama administration paid a courtesy visit to the Dagbon lord, Ya-Na Abukari II, at the Gbewah Palace in Yendi yesterday as part of his three-day “Building the Nation Tour” through the Northern Region.

Seven out of the 18 constituencies in the region are expected to be visited by the former president.

Mion, Gushegu, Yendi, Tamale North, Tamale South, Sagnarigu, and Tamale Central are the ones he’d be talking to about his vision and asking for their backing.

The country is in trouble and requires assistance from the current high levels of incompetence, greed, and corruption displayed by government officials, he said.

The Yendi water project.

The Mahama government’s inability to undertake the Yendi water supply project since taking office left him dissatisfied, saying: “I’m very disappointed that the government hasn’t been able to work on the project for about eight years now, even though the NDC-led government did almost all the groundwork for the start-up.”

If your son becomes the next president, I want to reassure you that you won’t be thirsty anymore, he said.

Over the past few years, the Yendi municipality and environs have been facing a perennial water crisis.

Even though the municipality has mechanised boreholes, they are not enough to meet the needs of the residents. This situation was forcing them to buy water from private individuals at a high cost.

Akufo-Addo cut the sod for a $30 million water project in 2020 to address the situation.

The water supply system, backed by the India Exim Bank, was expected to deliver 15,000 cubic metres of water per day to assist the populace.

The project is still in the early stages of development.

The Employment creation.

The Ya-Na thanked the former President for his visit and urged him to work on finding more jobs for the countless unemployed youth when he gets the chance to lead the country again.

The Overlord also advised him to ensure a clean campaign devoid of insults and vilification to help ensure an incident-free election in December this year.
