Wemakor receives special Invitation to Pan Africa Human Rights and Social Justice Conference in Nairobi

Joseph Kobla Wemakor, a distinguished human rights activist and journalist from Ghana, has recently achieved global recognition within the human rights community.

The Executive Director of Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has been extended a special invitation to the high-level Pan Africa Human Rights and Social Justice Conference by Ben Saul, the respected UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and countering terrorism.

Scheduled to take place at the renowned Argyle Grand Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, on June 8 and 9, 2024, this significant event aims to encourage dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders in Africa, with a focus on promoting a human rights-centered approach to combatting terrorism in the region.

The conference aspires to enhance cooperation among African civil society organizations, governmental bodies, and regional entities, with the potential to impact the Special Rapporteur’s upcoming report to the General Assembly in October 2024.

This report will highlight the importance of regional and sub regional bodies in protecting human rights while tackling terrorism-related challenges across the continent.

Upon receiving the invitation, Wemakor expressed his eagerness to engage with esteemed human rights advocates and policymakers to support human rights amidst counter-terrorism efforts in Africa.

His involvement in the G16 Regional Security Advocacy Group further underscores his dedication to advancing security processes in West Africa.

Wemakor and his colleagues from G16RSAC will not only have the opportunity to collaborate with the UN Special Rapporteur’s office on critical counter-terrorism issues in Africa but also partake in constructive dialogues to shape regional strategies in accordance with global human rights standards.

The conference symbolizes a beacon of hope in advocating for sustainable solutions, increased awareness, and improved regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism while upholding human rights principles.

Through collective endeavors and strategic involvement, Joseph Wemakor and his peers are poised to play a significant role in shaping a more equitable and rights-respecting future for Africa.

Joseph Wemakor attends Fortifying Community Truth Workshop 2024 in Abuja, Nigeria

Prominent Ghanaian journalist and human rights activist, Joseph Kobla Wemakor, has been chosen to participate in the esteemed Fortifying the Truth Cohort by WITNESS, a global human rights organization committed to empowering individuals to utilize video and technology in safeguarding human rights.

Wemakor stood out among applicants for the Training of Trainers Workshop on visual verification through a community-based approach, securing a place alongside 17 passionate journalists and frontline human rights defenders in West Africa.

His innovative project proposal and dedication to fortifying the truth and combating detrimental narratives captured the selection committee’s attention, earning him a coveted spot in this prestigious cohort.

The cohort finalists will undergo an intensive three-day training in community-based digital verification techniques at the Envoy Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria, from May 29th to 31st, 2024.

Jacquelyn Jasper-Ikpendu, Program Assistant for Africa at WITNESS, expressed enthusiasm for Wemakor’s vision and pledged support in a congratulatory letter on his selection.

This opportunity not only enables Wemakor to enhance his skills but also facilitates networking with colleagues from across Africa, promoting idea sharing and mutual learning within the vibrant cohort.

This recent achievement further enriches Wemakor’s impressive track record of substantial contributions to human rights advocacy and journalism.

Wemakor’s commitment to excellence and innovation was evident in his inclusion among 30 distinguished African human rights defenders for the Human Rights Training of Trainers in Tanzania last October, as well as his recognition among 25 science and health reporters in Ghana for specialized training in infectious disease reporting and health-related issues by the Centre for Science and Health Communication in May 2023.

His dedication to environmental awareness and outstanding journalism, showcased at the 2019 African Climate Risks Conference in Ethiopia, underscores his commitment to amplifying marginalized voices and addressing crucial issues.

Furthermore, his participation in influential workshops like the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa Financial Journalism Program in Ghana in 2019 and the Afreximbank Media Workshop on Intra-African Trade in Casablanca, Morocco, in 2018, has broadened his professional horizons and affirmed his commitment to impactful storytelling and journalistic integrity.

Joseph Kobla Wemakor, a well-known human rights advocate, humanitarian, and influential journalist in Ghana, serves as the founder and executive director of Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG), an organization dedicated to defending the rights of marginalized communities in society.

Aside from his numerous accolades and awards highlighting his steadfast commitment to social justice and equality, Joseph has won the 5th UN Global Entreps Awards, been a nominee for the African Defenders Shield Award in 2023, and received the Africa Peace Advocates Award in 2023.

Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Spearheads Policy Framework for Distance Education in Ghana

In a recent stakeholders’ dialogue organized by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), key players in the Ghanaian tertiary education sector converged to discuss the formulation of a robust policy framework to regulate distance education and distance learning in the country.

The event, which saw the participation of various tertiary institutions nationwide, aimed to address the evolving landscape of education delivery, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of Accreditation at GTEC, John Dadzie Mensah emphasized the necessity of regulating the space of innovative tertiary program delivery post-pandemic.

He stressed the importance of ensuring quality within this flexible domain, highlighting the risks of overlooking comprehensive policies.

Mensah underlined the collaborative nature of the stakeholders’ conference, emphasizing the critical role of institutions in refining the policy draft for effective implementation.

When questioned about the objectives of the policy, Mensah outlined the aim of establishing a comprehensive framework that guarantees quality assurance at both institutional and regulatory levels, ultimately benefiting the Ghanaian populace.

Professor Goski Alabi, Consulting President of Laweh Open University College, commended the dialogue as timely and essential for enhancing quality in higher education.

Alabi stressed the dynamic nature of quality assurance, underscoring the need for continuous improvement.

She highlighted the significance of open education in removing barriers to learning, particularly in the digital age, and stressed the importance of recognizing prior learning within the education system.

Professor Eric Nyarko Sampson, Vice Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, expressed enthusiasm for incorporating distance education into the university’s agenda.

He emphasized the alignment of institutional policies with national guidelines to enhance educational practices.

Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education, College of Education, University of Ghana, Professor Oliver Frimpong Kwapong, shared insights on the university’s experience in distance education.

She highlighted the institution’s commitment to providing quality distance learning programs and ensuring parity between distance learners and traditional students in terms of delivery, assessment, and certification.

In addition to applauding the regulator’s efforts to create a framework for policy that will standardize the delivery of distance education across Ghanaian universities, Prof. Kwapong emphasized the importance of education as a vehicle for development.

The stakeholders’ discussion highlighted the shared dedication to developing remote learning in Ghana and the significance of working together to create a long-lasting policy framework.
