Bagbin Urges Caution in 2024 Budget Approval
In a recent development, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has urged caution and emphasized that the approval 2024 budget statement, presented by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, will not be rushed, as reported by citinewsroom.com.
Speaking at a post-budget workshop in Parliament, Bagbin stressed the critical nature of the budget, calling for due diligence and thorough attention during the deliberation process. He conveyed, “This budget is a critical budget, and I want us to take time because leadership has discussed it with me, and we have enough time for you to deliberate on the budget.”
Bagbin encouraged members of Parliament not to resort to making political statements or engaging in propaganda but rather to focus on analyzing the budget critically. He urged them to consider the voices of the people while scrutinizing the document.
During the budget presentation to Parliament on November 15, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta unveiled projections indicating a substantial surge in the economy, from GH¢219.5 billion in 2016 to an unprecedented GH¢1 trillion in 2024. The Finance Minister also highlighted a noteworthy decline in inflation as a positive indicator of the economy’s improved performance.

However, the Finance Minister’s projections faced criticism from Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Gyamfi described the projections as the “lowest point” of the 2024 budget presentation, indicating dissent within the political landscape regarding the economic outlook.
As the deliberations on the 2024 budget unfold, the cautionary stance of Alban Bagbin underscores the gravity of the fiscal decisions at hand and emphasizes the importance of a thorough and thoughtful examination by Parliament.
