Bawumia Dismisses Mahama ‘s 24-Hour Economy Proposal as Clueless
In the latest political exchange leading up to the 2024 general elections in Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged Ghanaians to disregard John Dramani Mahama’s proposal for a 24-hour economy. Bawumia, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), criticized Mahama, stating that the former president lacks a clear understanding of what a 24-hour economy entails.
Speaking to the public, Bawumia highlighted that the 24-hour economy concept is not new to Ghana, asserting that various sectors, including hospitals, fuel stations, and utilities, already operate around the clock. He argued, “John Mahama says he has a new idea. What is the idea? He says he wants a 24-hour economy. He doesn’t even understand that policy.”
The Vice President pointed out that due to digitalization, financial transactions and services are available 24 hours a day, further diminishing the novelty of Mahama’s proposal. Bawumia positioned himself as the candidate with a fresh vision for the future, contrasting Mahama as a representative of the past.

Bawumia also took a swipe at Mahama’s previous term, referencing the challenges faced during the “dumsor” era, characterized by frequent power outages. According to Bawumia, achieving a 24-hour economy is unattainable in the presence of power challenges, emphasizing the need for a forward-looking leader.
In response to Bawumia’s remarks, Mahama, during his “Building Ghana Tour” in the Bono East region, promised to review the 10% bet tax implemented by the Ghana Revenue Authority on betting, games, and lottery wins. Mahama expressed concern about the tax burden imposed by the current government and pledged to reevaluate various taxes if elected in 2024.
As the political discourse intensifies, Ghanaians find themselves at the crossroads of competing visions for the country’s future, with economic policies and taxation taking center stage in the ongoing political narrative. The contrasting positions of Bawumia and Mahama set the stage for a dynamic and closely watched electoral campaign in the run-up to the 2024 elections.
