CHEATING IN BECE AND HOW IT CAN BE STOPPED

I write to share my thoughts on cheating in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BACE) and how cheating can be can be stopped.

Cheating in examination at the basic school level has been taking place on a yearly basis with some papers being canceled by WAEC in the past due to mass leakage of examination questions.

Once examination questions leak, it gives room to cheating, however, it is not the only means through which cheating goes on in the BECE.

In some instances, students go to the examination hall with prepared answers, some invigilators and teachers encourage students to cheat by not enforcing the rules of the examination. Sometimes, teachers and invigilators have been caught taking money from students to help them cheat in the examination.

Again, in some examination centres, school heads are required to contribute huge sums of money to be used to feed invigilators. This creates avenues for cheating to be encouraged since such acts can influence invigilators.

Since permitting any form of cheating at the BECE is wrong, and makes other students disadvantages, there is the need to help stop the practice.

I believe that one way this can be achieved is to ensure, teachers who bring their students to the examination centres are not allowed to remain on the premises. This will ensure students are left to do their independent works.

Also, school headteachers must not be allowed to make any contributions toward the feeding of invigilators during the examination in any centre. This will prevent the invigilators from feeling that they have to return the favour by allowing candidates to engage in cheating such as swapping question papers with answers on them and communicating with each other during the papers.

I am of the view that these measures if put in place can help stop cheating in the BECE.
