BECE candidates to write 3 new subjects
In the latest Ghana Education Service News, final year JHS students in Ghana will be writing 3 additional subjects in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for candidates.
What are the 3 new subjects added to BECE for students? These 3 new subjects for BECE students are Career Technology, Creative Art and Design, and Arabic Language. It should be noted that Career Technology and Creative Art and Design, which was derived from the former Basic Design Technology (BDT), would be written by every final year junior high school student in Ghana according to WAEC.
The only optional subject for the BECE candidates is Arabic in Islamic Basic Schools.

Days extended for 2024 BECE Examination
Because of this new changes and subjects added to the BECE, the GES has extended the usual 5 days for BECE exams to 6 days rather. Back then it was Monday to Friday, but this time around its going to be Monday , July 9, 2024 to Monday July, 15 2024.
Elaborating on the 2024 BECE Examination, the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Mr. John Kapi, told the Daily Graphic that new subjects can be introduced into the examination anytime since the exams is only for Ghana junior high school students.
According to the head of public affairs, the council is done registering the BECE students and would soon categorize students according to the subjects they’re going to write and subjects they registered for.
He stated that WAEC is ready for the BECE Examination as it has concluded all meetings related to the examination. Moreover, they’ve sent sample questions to schools and posted sample questions on the WAEC Council’s website too.
“The printing exercise will start very soon, and so we are on course,” he emphasised. In the case of Arabic, he said it was the first time the subject was being examined at the BECE.
He said the subject could be best described as an elective, and could also be written by persons who believed they were proficient in it and wanted a certificate to that effect.
Timetable for GHANA BECE 2024
Per the official timetable released by WAEC, candidates will write English Language and Religious and Moral Education on Monday, July 8, 2024.
On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, candidates will write Science and Computing, which was previously Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), and then write Social Studies and Creative Art and Design on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
