BREAKING: GES Opens 2026 Promotion Applications for Teachers – Check the New Qualification Rules Now

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has opened a fresh promotion opportunity for suitably qualified teaching staff and officers seeking advancement to some of the Service’s senior professional ranks.
A notice dated 18 August 2026, referenced GES/HO/DG/495/2026, invites eligible serving teachers and officers to apply for promotion to the ranks of Deputy Director, Assistant Director I, Assistant Director II and Principal Superintendent.
The announcement is significant for teachers who have remained on their current ranks for several years and are now looking to advance their careers within the Ghana Education Service.
According to the GES notice, applicants for Deputy Director should have been promoted to the rank of Assistant Director I in or before 2022 and should have remained continuously at post since that promotion, except for periods covered by approved leave of absence.
For Assistant Director I, applicants should have attained the rank of Assistant Director II in or before 2022 and should similarly have remained at post, subject to approved leave.

The qualification requirement also extends to applicants seeking Assistant Director II. The notice states that candidates should have been promoted to the rank of Principal Superintendent in or before 2022 and should have served continuously from that point, excluding approved periods of absence.
Teachers applying for Principal Superintendent must, according to the notice, have been promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent I in or before 2022 and must have remained at post since then, apart from approved leave.
The new notice is therefore particularly important for teachers who believe they have met the required years and rank progression. Rather than assuming eligibility, applicants are expected to carefully compare their promotion history with the requirements stated by the Service before submitting an application.
The Ghana Education Service has over the years used promotion exercises as an important avenue for career progression, allowing experienced teachers and officers to take on greater responsibilities within Ghana’s pre-tertiary education system. Previous GES promotion exercises have similarly applied specific rank and service-period requirements.
Teachers are advised to read the full GES notice carefully, prepare the required supporting documents and follow the official application instructions. Any teacher who qualifies should avoid waiting until the final stage of the process before taking action.
For education-sector workers, the opening of the 2026 promotion exercise could be an important career opportunity. Eligible teachers are therefore encouraged to verify their status and act promptly.
