ACCRA, Ghana — As part of its commitment to honoring the dedication and contribution of the nation’s labor force, the Ministry of the Interior has formally declared Friday, May 1st, 2026, a Statutory Public Holiday in recognition of Workers Day, or May Day.
The official statement, issued on April 27th, 2026, and signed by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed–Mubarak (MP), underscores the significance of this day as a moment of national tribute.
Commemorating Ghanaian Workers
Minister Mohammed–Mubarak emphasized that Workers Day is not merely a day away from the workplace, but a crucial opportunity to celebrate the resilience and ingenuity of Ghanaian workers across all sectors.
“This public holiday stands as a powerful testament to the value that the government, and this Ministry, places on the human capital that drives Ghana’s economy forward,” stated a spokesperson for the Minister. “It is a day to recognize the challenges overcome and the achievements made by our labor unions, employees, and all industrious Ghanaians. Their efforts are fundamental to our collective progress, and their voice is vital in the conversation of national development.”
The Ministry strongly urges the general public and all employers to observe the day appropriately, allowing the workforce time to participate in festivities, reflect on labor rights, and rest.
Widespread Observance and Festivities
Workers Day is typically observed throughout Ghana with parades, rallies, and educational events organized by various labor organizations, such as the Trades Union Congress (TUC). These events are vital in highlighting key issues impacting the workforce, including wages, working conditions, and social security.
