CETAG threatens another strike over unpaid allowances after ending nearly 2 months strike
The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) citing the government’s continued failure to honour earlier agreements concerning their allowances has threatened to embark on a strike next week.
A spokesman for the Colleges Teachers Association, Dominic Owusu speaking to journalists said upcoming industrial action is intended to compel meaningful dialogue and achieve a conclusive, satisfactory resolution to the members’ demands.
“The timeline that we agreed upon which the strike was called off has still not been done. Now, they promised us that by the first week of September, we would have gotten the offline data coming into the college.
Then every member in the colleges of education will see where we have been placed by way of the migration and then also check our biodata. But as I speak, we don’t know why they hide the migration offline data.
Also, they promised us that when the strike is called off, by the end of August, we are going to get the all-year-round compensation for work done in 2022. But as I speak to you right now, we have not received our money.
They keep telling us that the money will come in their GIFMIS account, but it keeps disappointing and as I speak to you now, we have not gotten our money.
This is why we are saying that if by the end of this week, nothing is heard, we are going to have a full-blown strike,” Mr. Owusu told the media.
Meanwhile, the Association in August reached an agreement with the central government to call off strike action which lasted nearly two months and disrupted academic activities since June 14, 2024.
Speaking to the media after a meeting with stakeholders, CETAG’s National Trustee, Maxwell Bunu, said most of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana’s concerns have been addressed by the central government.
“The issue of all-year-round work and then the de-freezing of the July salary and the payment of the August salary—I think all these concerns have been addressed. And as a National CETAG Trustee, I don’t think with my experience here, it will be prudent for CETAG to remain on strike.
So as we have indicated here, we would certainly go back and convey all the issues that have been discussed and approved of by the officials here, so that by the close of tomorrow, with consultation with the council, I think we will do the needful because we cannot continue to be on strike forever,” he stated.
