Commercial sex workers in Kumasi, popularly known as “Ashawo,” have raised their pay to reflect the country’s high cost of living. Because of the high standard of living, they have also increased their prices.
According to them, the cost of the clothes, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals they use to attract men and protect themselves has risen, necessitating the need to raise their prices in order to stay in business.
They also stated that rising transportation and food prices are putting a strain on their finances.
Amanda Williams (not her real name), a sex worker at the Dichemso plaza, told OnuaOnline in pidgin, “Ghana make hot well.” Everything was good when I arrived in Ghana, but now everything is worse. The food we chop and cars we take to see our customers all increase high and high.”
“Because the economy is struggling, we are raising our prices.” “Previously, a short was 50gh, but now you fi pay 200gh sef and 700gh for the entire night,” she revealed.
She also stated that economic hardship is making it difficult for their customers to patronize their services, resulting in low sales.
“The men sef dey complain that they don’t have any money.” Some say they haven’t received their salaries for several months. We used to be able to get three men in the morning, but now we’re lucky to get one for the entire day,” she grumbled.
