Committee to End Double-Track SHS System Formed

A high-powered committee was inaugurated today by the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to oversee the reversal of the double-track system in Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHSTS) to a single-track system.
Their work is expected to provide in-depth advice and guidance for the government to end the double-track system, introduced into the second cycle of education by the Nana Addo government due to the rushed implementation of the Free SHS policy and its related challenges.
Per their mandate, they are to review the 2024/2025 academic calendar, realign the WASSCE calendar with other West African countries, and provide a roadmap for reversing the SHS/SHSTS double-track system to a single-track system.
The National Democratic Congress and John Mahama, prior to their 2024 election victory, promised to abolish the double-track system if they won political power.
To fulfill this promise, an 11-member committee, chaired by Prof. Peter Grant of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), comprises representatives from various institutions, including:
- Prof. Godwin Awabil, University of Cape Coast (UCC)
- Prof. Samuel A. Atintono, PRINCOF
- Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi (Mrs.), Deputy Director-General (Management Service), GES
- Dr. Munawaru Issahaque, Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access), GES
- D. W. Agbenyo, WAEC
- Rosemond Wilson (PhD), WAEC
- Mr. Augustus Agyemfra, CODE
- Mr. David Odjidja, CHASS
- Addo Nicholas Nii Kpakpoe, COHBS
- Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, Schools & Instructions Division, GES
The mandate includes reviewing the 2024/2025 academic calendar, realigning the WASSCE calendar with other West African countries, and providing a roadmap for reversing the SHS/SHSTS double-track system to a single-track system. The effort to end the double-track SHS system has begun. In a related development, the reporting date for students in single-track schools has been postponed from March 30, 2025, to April 23, 2025.
