About National Cathedral
The National Cathedral of Ghana is a forthcoming interdenominational Christian cathedral set to grace the city of Accra, the nation’s capital, marking a significant part of Ghana’s 60th-anniversary celebration. Spanning across a lush 9-acre garden area adjacent to Osu Cemetery, this grand cathedral project took shape when President Nana Akufo-Addo unveiled its design in March 2018.
At its core, the cathedral will feature a spacious auditorium with seating for up to 5,000 individuals, alongside the essential chapels and a baptistery. This sacred site will also become home to a music school, an art gallery, and a museum dedicated to the Bible, enriching the spiritual and cultural experiences it offers.
In a nod to the rich art and culture of Ghanaian ethnic groups, the cathedral’s design is a testament to the nation’s heritage. The striking, high-pitched and staggered roof draws inspiration from the architectural traditions of the Akan people. The cathedral’s façade will bear a concave design, adorned with timber elements reminiscent of the renowned Ashanti royal stools. Notably, the visionary behind this architectural masterpiece is none other than the acclaimed British-Ghanaian architect, David Adjaye, renowned for his exceptional work on the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
