The turning point for Accra Polytechnic came with the passage of the Polytechnic Law of 1992 (PNDC 321).
Accra Technical University got to its recent status as a tertiary institution. Was renamed from Accra Polytechnic to Accra Technical University in 1992.
This key law boosted the institution to a tertiary status and placed it under the Higher Education Council.
Thereby awarding it the autonomy to award Higher National Diplomas (HND) through the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX).

Notably, the university retained its focus on technician courses offered during its Polytechnic days.
In 2007, the Polytechnic Act (Act 745) was enacted, replacing PNDC Law 321 of 1992. This transformative act granted Accra Technical University even greater autonomy.
Thereby permitting it to award Degrees and Diplomas accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB), subject to conditions set by the university’s council.
