Disgraced Attorney Alex Murdaugh Found Guilty of Murdering Wife and Son
After a month-long trial, Alex Murdaugh has been convicted of murdering his wife and son in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Learn about the case and sentencing hearing.
Alex Murdaugh, a former attorney with a powerful legal family in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, has been found guilty of murdering his wife and 22-year-old son in June 2021.
Following a month-long trial and less than three hours of deliberation, the jury convicted Murdaugh of two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Friday, where prosecutors are seeking life in prison without parole.
Despite the lack of direct evidence connecting Murdaugh to the crime scene, the prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence such as phone and vehicle tracking systems to prove his movements the night of the murders.
Prosecutors argued that Murdaugh’s motive was to distract from investigations into his financial troubles, which he allegedly caused by stealing millions from his clients and law firm.
Murdaugh took the stand in his own defense and claimed he found the bodies after returning from visiting his sick mother.
The defense argued that he was a loving father and husband who would not harm his family and that authorities did not properly examine other suspects.
However, the judge denied their request for a mistrial, stating that the evidence against Murdaugh was overwhelming.
In addition to the murder charges, Murdaugh faces 99 charges related to alleged financial crimes in a separate case that has yet to go to trial.
