Documentary: ‘Yahoo Boys’ Unveil Shocking Secrets of Juju in Online Fraud
Online fraud, commonly associated with the infamous ‘Yahoo Boys,’ has become a grave concern for the Cyber Security Authority and the Ghana Police Service. While both entities are tirelessly combatting this menace in Ghana, the criminals’ tactics seem to evolve and persist. The gravity of this issue was highlighted recently when the Cyber Security Authority reported that Ghana incurred a staggering loss of GH¢49.5 million in the first nine months of 2023 due to the activities of cybercriminals.
Despite the ongoing efforts by the police to apprehend these criminals, the allure of easy money continues to draw new recruits into the world of online fraud. A revealing GhanaWeb documentary titled “Escaping the Crime” sheds light on this grim underbelly of crime. The documentary features young Nigerian men who were lured to Ghana to join online fraud rings, and they share shocking insights into how these criminal networks operate.
The documentary unveils the harsh reality faced by these young men, who were coerced into illegal activities and forced to live in rented houses controlled by their masters. In a desperate bid for escape, they decided to reveal the dark secrets behind the online fraud world.
One revelation that confirms long-held suspicions is the role of “juju” or black magic in their operations. According to one of the interviewees, “These things we’re doing, there’s something we call grace, you can just jam a helper he’ll come and just help you, and some that are forming stubborn and you see they have money, you can’t just let them go like that, you can just go and tie them… anything juju we’re not doing it for our own self, we’re using it to lock those people to favor us.”

Another participant disclosed the intriguing workings of juju, stating, “it dey work oo, it depends, and what will make it work is based on your chairman. If he goes for that juju, then that baba will give him conditions. The general condition they mostly give to all the chairmen in this Ghana is to stay away from sex… but most of the chairmen they won’t, and that is the reason why boys are not collecting money from the office. Like my chairman, he changes women like boxers.”
He further explained that their chairmen periodically renew their allegiance to juju, although he was uncertain about the frequency.
One more shocking revelation concerned the use of fetish rituals. The men described a ritual where their chairman would gather fetish items, place them in a pot, and set it on fire. As the smoke enveloped them, they were instructed to say their desires, but the ritual seemingly yielded no results.
These chilling revelations provide a glimpse into the mysterious and unsettling world of online fraud, where desperation and the allure of quick wealth can lead young individuals down a dark path. The fight against online fraud continues, and these testimonies shed light on the complex web of belief, fear, and deception that sustains it.
