Don’t fail to supply textbooks before term 3 starts: GNAT President to MoE

Don't fail to supply textbooks

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has disclosed that it will not sit aloof to see term 3 of the 2022 academic year start without the Ministry of Education supplying textbooks three years after the introduction of the new curriculum.

Speaking to Adom FM news in an interview, Rev. Dr. Isaac Owusu, The GNAT President said, it is only individuals who do not understand education who hold the view that textbooks are of no importance in education.

He added that the supply of books is long overdue and has serious negative implications for education, on the teachers, and learners as a whole in the country.

“It is good that the Ministry of Education has given publishers 120 days to print the books, however, as schools go on vacation on Thursday, they are looking forward to the books being made available to schools as soon as term three starts.” He said.

He further indicated that, if the government and the MoE fail to supply the books in the final term of the 2022 academic year, they will lay all the blame at the doorsteps of the Ministry of Education.

He debunked the assertion that teachers do not need books. “The children we teach need the books as a reference as well so that they can learn and do their work”.

Rev. Dr. Isaac Owusu further called on publishers to expedite their production process and ensure they make the books available by the 13th of September when the third term begins.

Not less than five local printers have been contracted to print textbooks for basic schools under the new curriculum. These publishers include G-PAK Ltd, a subsidiary of the Graphic Communications Group Limited; the Buck Press, Appointed Time Printing Ltd, Jay Kay Industries Ltd and Sec-print Ltd. The printers which have secured the printing contracts have three months to complete the jobs and a month to deliver the books to the schools.
