Don’t repeat any student, promote every JHS2 student to JHS3 -GES to all Schools

The Ghana Education Service has directed all Schools and head teachers not to repeat any of the students who were in JHS2 in 2022 and are expected to be in JHS3 in 2023.

In a letter dated 17th January 2023, the Management of the GES directed that all students who were in form 2 last year must all be promoted to ensure these students are not disadvantaged. The reasons given by the GES were very legitimate and must be adhered to by both public and private schools across the nation.

Parents whose wards have been repeated and for which reason the student is not in JHS3 this year must ensure their ward is promoted to JHS3.

Below are the valid reasons that no one can dispute.

The GES indicated that it has come to the attention of the management of the Ghana Education Service that some heads of public basic schools are repeating the last academic year’s JHS 2 students who are progressing to JHS 3 this academic year.

The management of GES has indicated that it takes serious exception to this practice, this is due to the fact that the current JHS three students are the last batch of the objective-based curriculum who will write the final BECE under the said syllabus this year the current. Students who were promoted to JHS2 this year are going to be the first batch who will write BECE in 2024 using the new standard-based curriculum.

In view of the above, all last year’s JHS2 students should progress to GHS 3 in order not to disadvantage any objective-based curriculum student in the BECE.

Accordingly, management of the GES is requesting regional directors of education to bring the above directives to the attention of Metro municipal District directors of education for strict compliance by all heads of basic schools.

Per the above directive, a student who is prevented from being in JHS3 this year will have difficulties writing BECE in 2024 since the syllabus is not the same.
