Driver, mate beat policeman, drag him on the floor [VIDEO]
Ghanaians are angry about a video that shows a commercial vehicle driver and his friend beating up a police officer from the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
The video that is going around on social media was first posted by the state-owned Daily Graphic. It has got a lot of angry responses, and many people are calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to look into what happened and bring the people responsible to justice.
The disturbing video was posted by Daily Graphic with the caption, “How a “trotro” driver and his “mate” acted when a police officer from MTTD came up to them as part of his official duties during a motor check.”
Even though we don’t know what made the two civilians attack the uniformed police officer, we can see them taking him hostage and leaving him helpless before kicking him off his feet and making him fall on his back into what looks like a shallow gutter by the road.
The two attackers then jumped on the officer, pinned him to the ground, and kept beating him while they seemed to be trying to get something out of his hands.
People in the area stood back and watched the officer deal with the situation on his own until he was able to stand up. Then, some of them moved closer to try to stop the attackers from continuing to beat him.
Francis Buabeng, a commercial bus driver, and Albert Ansah, his friend, were caught on video beating up a police officer in 2019. They were fined GHS 3,600 and given a year in prison if they didn’t pay.
After they were arrested in March 2019, a Circuit Court in Weija, Accra, found them guilty of assault.
Several Civil Society Organizations, like the Human Rights Advocacy Centre, Amnesty International Ghana, and the Human Rights and Governance Centre, offered to help the suspects get justice.
