Education Minister launches STEMNNOVATION 2024
The Ghanaian Minister of Education has officially launched the third iteration of its national Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competition for second cycle schools, termed “STEMNNOVATION 2024”.
This prestigious contest is designed to radically transform the educational landscape in Ghana, aiming to arm the youth with the crucial skills needed to thrive in the increasingly technology-driven global economy.
STEMNNOVATION 2024 stands out not just as a competition but as a beacon of innovation and practical learning.
It challenges participating students to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world problems, thereby fostering essential problem-solving abilities.
Throughout the competition, students will engage in projects that address pivotal issues such as environmental sustainability, food sovereignty, sustainable energy, and advancements in digital technology.
These projects are intended not only to develop practical solutions to these challenges but also to contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Ghana.
The event was launched in Accra and saw a significant turnout from various stakeholders in the educational sector, including heads of educational agencies, leaders of second cycle institutions, traditional leaders, and students.

The collective presence of these stakeholders underscores the communal support for STEM education and its perceived importance for the future of the country.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, during the launch, emphasized the transformative shift in Ghana’s educational approach—from the rote memorization tactics of old to a new era where technology and innovation are at the forefront of educational strategies.
“We aim to make the education system relevant to the needs of the country with this initiative,” Dr. Adutwum remarked.
He expressed his gratitude towards the traditional leaders and heads of schools for their active engagement and support of STEM and STEMNNOVATION.
Dr. Adutwum passionately encouraged students from all backgrounds to participate in the competition. “STEM is here to stay; we are creating a pipeline for it, from kindergarten through to tertiary education. It doesn’t matter where your school is located; it is for everyone,” he declared, urging students to showcase their innovative capabilities and solution-oriented thinking.
Nana Baffour Awuah IV, the Director of Pre-Tertiary at the Ministry of Education, described STEMNNOVATION not merely as a competition but as a movement—a dynamic shift towards integrating science into practical solutions for everyday challenges.
“It is a call to action to unleash potential and shape the future,” he explained, noting that the platform provides students with the opportunity to act as catalysts for change and reach new heights in their academic and future professional endeavors.
Adding a cultural perspective, the Osu Mantse, Nortse Nii Nortey Owuo IV, highlighted the critical role of technology in today’s world, especially for a country like Ghana aspiring to carve out a significant position on the global stage.
“In the 21st century, we can’t stand aside from how the world is moving with technology,” he stated.
He stressed the importance of engaging with modern technologies and innovations, suggesting that initiatives like STEMNNOVATION are crucial for developing African solutions to African challenges and for positioning Ghana as a technologically savvy nation.
As STEMNNOVATION 2024 unfolds, it promises not only to enhance the educational experiences of Ghanaian students but also to inspire them to be at the forefront of technological and scientific advancements, propelling Ghana towards greater innovation and sustained economic growth.
