Hand over reconstruction of Sempe School for timely completion – Sempe Mantse to govt

The Mankralo of the Ga State, Nii Adote Otintor II, has issued an urgent plea to the government: hand over the reconstruction of Sempe Primary School to the traditional authority to ensure its timely completion.
This appeal was made during a press briefing aimed at addressing the halted progress on an educational facility that promises to benefit the community significantly.
Located in the historic area of Sempe, an integral part of Accra known for its vibrant culture and significant historical landmarks, Sempe Primary School’s renovation is critical not only for educational development but also for preserving community integrity.
Sempe, a town with a rich heritage linked to the Ga people, has always valued education as a pillar of community advancement.
The school’s reconstruction project began under the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) during the tenure of Alfred Oko Vanderpuije.
It was part of a broader initiative to develop millennium schools across the Greater Accra metropolis, aimed at eradicating the shift system in schools which often disrupts students’ learning experience.
Funded by AMA’s internally generated funds, the project was envisioned to transform the existing facilities into a modern educational complex.
However, with the shift in political power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the momentum on this crucial project waned, leading to an indefinite halt.
As a result, the construction site has been left in a state of neglect, with the unfinished structures serving as a disheartening symbol of stagnation.
The students, meanwhile, have been relocated to a temporary shed, a situation that the Sempe Mantse describes as detrimental to their academic activities.

The proximity of the school to the Sempe Mantse’s palace has made the plight of the school and its students a constant presence, prompting frequent complaints from residents.
“I do get a lot of complaints from residents to act on the situation as a traditional leader,” said Nii Adote Otintor II.
He believes that transferring control of the project to the traditional authority could expedite its completion, thereby restoring normalcy and improving educational outcomes in the community.
In his statements, Nii Adote Otintor II also expressed frustration with the current Mayor of Accra, Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, accusing her of failing to collaborate with the traditional authorities on developmental projects within the Ga Traditional Area.
He pointed out that similar issues had arisen with other projects, such as a hostel facility for head porters at Agbogboloshie, indicating a pattern of oversight and exclusion of local custodians in the planning and execution of community projects.
“The Mayor of Accra has never engaged the traditional authorities in undertaking any project in the Ga Traditional Area,” he lamented, highlighting the need for inclusive governance that respects and incorporates the insights of local leadership.
This call to action from Nii Adote Otintor II is not just about the completion of a building; it’s about respecting and leveraging local governance structures to enhance project delivery and effectiveness.
It underscores the necessity for collaborative efforts between government bodies and traditional authorities to ensure that the educational needs of Sempe’s youth are met promptly.
By entrusting the project to those who are deeply rooted in the community, there is a stronger likelihood of accountability and a renewed focus on the completion of the Sempe Primary School, ultimately leading to enhanced educational facilities for the children of Sempe.
As this debate continues, it is hoped that all parties will come together to find a resolution that centers on the best interests of the students and the broader community, ensuring that education remains a priority in the development agenda of the Ga Traditional Area.
