Use old textbooks to teach the new curriculum content – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says teachers as they wait for the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to release the new curriculum-based textbooks can use the old textbooks for teaching in classrooms.

Since the introduction of the standard-based curriculum for KG-Basic 6 in 2019 and that of the Junior High School in 2020, the Ghana Education Service is yet to supply public schools with textbooks that match the new curriculum for teaching and learning.

However, the GES has now disclosed that teachers can use old textbooks to teach content in the new curriculum

This was made known by Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) while speaking in an interview with Peace 104.3 FM on Thursday.

He said although it is mandatory for teachers to get new textbooks based on the curriculum for teaching they need not base their teaching on only textbooks.

He added that they need to discover their own means of teaching learners in their respective classrooms, including the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices while waiting for the new NaCCA textbooks.

“So maybe you have a topic that interests you in the old textbooks, you can use that to teach using the skills of the standard-based. The topics have not changed but how you teach has only changed,” Prof Opoku Amankwa stated.
